One Day Itinerary in Nara – Deers, Temples & Treats

Nara is famously known for its friendly free-roaming deer, and honestly, they were the main reason I wanted to visit. It’s fascinating to see deer wandering casually as you explore historical sites and scenic paths. While many travelers plan just a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka, two or even three days in Nara would allow you to take it all in more leisurely. But if you only have a day, here’s a great itinerary based on my own trip from Osaka, with a friend coming in from Mie.

One Day Nara Itinerary

10:45 AM – Kintetsu-Nara Station

We started our day by meeting at Kintetsu-Nara Station. It’s a convenient and well-located spot for travelers coming from different directions.

11:00 AM – Stroll through Higashimuki Nakamachi and Sanjo Dori

We slowly walked through Higashimuki Nakamachi Shopping Street and crossed over to Sanjo Dori, browsing local shops and taking in the atmosphere.

11:30 AM – Brunch at Cafe Plum

Tucked away in a side alley, Cafe Plum is a cozy counter-style cafe run by a sweet elderly lady. The sandwiches are freshly made, and there’s an English menu! Highly recommend stopping by if you’re nearby and looking for a warm, local experience.

12:25 PM – Head to Nara Park with Sightseeing Stops

As we made our way to Nara Park, we checked out:

  • Kōfuku-ji Shoro (Bell Tower): A historic bell tower, simple yet striking.
  • Kōfuku-ji Temple: Once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, it’s full of rich history.
  • Kōfuku-ji Gojūnotō (Five Story Pagoda): A stunning five-story pagoda that’s a symbol of Nara.

3:00 PM – Kakigori Break at SOUSUKE by Hosekibako

On a hot afternoon, shaved ice (kakigori) was the perfect treat. We only waited 10 minutes for a table, and the dessert was beautifully presented and refreshing.

4:30 PM – Explore Nara Park & Todai-ji

We finally reached Nara Park. Highlights included:

  • Todai-ji Temple: Home to the Great Buddha statue, a must-see.
  • Taking photos with deer: You can’t visit Nara without a deer selfie!

6:30 PM – Back to Sanjo Dori for Snacks & Dinner

  • Nakatanidou: Famous for its fresh mochi, made right in front of you.
  • Dinner at Nara Omotenashi Restaurant: Delicious and reasonably priced local meal to end the day.

8:30 PM – Head Back to Osaka

After a full day, we took the train back.

Tip: If you’re staying overnight, check out the Naramachi area for more dining options and a charming atmosphere.

Places We Missed (Bucket List for Next Time)

  • Nara National Museum
  • Isuien Garden and Neiraku Museum
  • Kasuga Taisha Shrine

Helpful Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes – there’s a lot of walking.
  • Watch out for deer droppings – they roam freely.
  • Avoid plastic or paper bags – deer associate them with snacks and may try to grab them!

Shopping Recommendations

  • Nara Kobako candies
  • Nakatanidou mochi (fresh and chewy)
  • Yamato tea & sweets
  • Deer-themed souvenirs
  • Nara dolls (Ittobori) – Traditional carved wooden dolls

Nara makes for a magical day trip, offering a blend of culture, cuisine, and charming deer encounters. Just be prepared for a lot of walking and unexpected deer behavior – it’s part of the charm!
